The
Griffin was a fabulous bird, with the powerful wings, head, and beak of an eagle,
and the body of a lion. The Griffin personified speed and sharp vision, combined
with the strength and majesty of a lion. The Griffins were sacred to Apollo, whose
treasures they guarded in the land of the Hyperboreans. The Griffins were associated
with Nemesis who was the guardian against all excesses, and also with Dionysus
as guardians of his ever-flowing bowl of wine. The duality of benevolence and
creulty, of spiritual asperations, and physical courage, has inspired poets and
philosophers throughout the ages. |
