Head of a Satyr
woodcut 33 x 27
Satyrs are creatures of nature who appear in Dionysus' train. The satyr is half-man, half-goat, prone to drinking and lusting after women. It is sometimes portrayed with horns or goat's ears The satyr had a perpetually erect penis of enormous proportions, and was depicted dancing, drinking with Dionysus, and persuing the Maenads and Nymphs. Perhaps the most famous Satyr was Pan, god of the woods.
